Many homeowners these days prefer to use wireless surveillance cameras because of the ease of installation. Unlike wired systems that require a lot of drilling and playing around with hardware, Wi-Fi cameras, for the most part, are simple to set up. This is the reason many DIY surveillance systems make use of wireless technology.
When installing wireless cameras in India, you should take several factors into consideration. First, unlike western countries, many places in India have internet connectivity issues. Second, unexpected power interruptions are still a problem. Third, you should be aware of the government regulations concerning CCTV installations. So, when installing a CCTV system at an Indian home, consider these issues.
Please note that this guide is for installing a Wi-Fi camera at home without using an NVR. The videos, in this case, can be recorded either to the cloud or in an SD card that fits into the camera and can be accessed on your mobile phone.
Follow the steps below to set up your home Wi-Fi surveillance system.
Plan the placement of the camera
The first step is to decide which parts of your house need to be covered. The most important places in this regard are the front and back entrance. Those who live in apartments will not have back entrances, but they may have balconies which need to be covered. If your house is an independent villa, consider having a camera on the sides of the house.
If you need to keep an eye on what goes on inside the house, cameras need to be placed in strategic locations with the rooms. Some people like to do this to keep an eye on maids or other workers who may be at home when the owner is not. If you have any valuables in your home, installing cameras near its location will be useful.
A good idea is to place the camera in a corner at a high level, close to the ceiling. If you can fix it to the ceiling itself, even better. This is not just to get a good view but also to make sure no one tampers with the camera.
Get power sources near desired locations
Wherever you decide to fix a camera, it needs to have a source for power. There are two ways to ensure this. A socket near your camera would be the easiest option. However, if this is not possible, get a power extension system.
Ensure uninterrupted power supply
A surveillance camera that does not function 24 hours is useless. So, you must find ways to deal with any kind of power interruption. Make sure there is a power backup for the lines that travel to the cameras. Make sure your Wi-Fi router has a similar option too. These days, some small inverters are available specifically for routers. You may consider them as well.
Depending on the camera brand, follow the instructions to set up the camera
There are several Wi-Fi home surveillance cameras available in the market. A quick look at Amazon or other online retailers will give you a basic idea of the cost and availability. Most of these follow similar, simple installation procedure and the instructions will be provided when you get the product. We won’t go into the details of each product in this article but will have separate pages for each product that we cover.
Install the app and configure the connection
Most wireless camera manufacturers have their own apps for Android and iOS phones. Install these from the relevant stores and connect them to the camera through your WiFi system. Once configured, you will be able to access recorded as well as real-time videos on your phone.
